University of Mary washington enters e-Learning PARTNERSHIP WITH KZO Networks Powered by Sun Microsystems

Fredericksburg, Va. – University of Mary Washington President William J. Frawley today announced a strategic partnership with KZO Networks (KZO) to explore how the University can enhance e-learning with the KZO Flash e-Learning Platform.

“On our campuses, technology continues to move beyond a mere supportive role in pedagogy and be transformative in classroom teaching, thus expanding the very notions of ‘classroom’ and teaching,’” said Frawley. “Blogs, wikis, podcasts, and webcasts are commonplace, and, with the KZO technology, we can increase and enhance the range of resources available to faculty and students. With this new KZO technology, it is not hard to imagine UMW reaching far beyond the walls of the Stafford and Fredericksburg classrooms to national and global audiences.”

With KZO’s unique Flash video technology, educational and training organizations have the ability to webcast live presentations and events as chapters for simultaneous posting as video-on-demand (VOD). KZO’s software provides a wizard for the presenter to pre-segment the presentation into short digestible video objects which are tagged in real time. Concurrent with the presentation or event, the software uploads the “chaptered” video onto the e-Learning platform hosted by KZO. Enormous amounts of valuable programming can be inexpensively produced and archived into a searchable digital repository for subsequent “anyplace, anytime” learning.

KZO has been developing real-time digital collaboration-based tools over the past several years for its global webcasting services. It has incorporated these tools into an open-source Flash streaming server, creating an e-learning platform, which it is marketing to educational and training organizations and hosting these services on its 8-gigabit optical network.

“This technology has the potential to transform online education and training,” said KZO President Phil Cruver, “and we are delighted to be working with our partners, the University of Mary Washington and Sun Microsystems, to showcase state-of-the-art, real-time collaborative e-learning.”

Kevin Roebuck, Market Development Manager for e-learning at Sun Microsystems stated: “Sun is the number 1 contributor to open source projects and communities in the world. New rich media environments and services like KZO provide faculty and students with powerful new tools to enhance teaching, learning and collaboration. Sun is contributing a SunFIRE server to KZO to power UMW’s e-learning platform and has entered into a strategic partnership with KZO to provide the platform and infrastructure for the roll-out of its technology and services in academic and government markets."
